We’ve all lied about something, whether it be a little ‘white lie’ or a lie of great magnitude. The question isn’t if people lie, but more so, why do people lie? What is the motive for lying and what does it gain for an individual to lie?

Some lies are used to attempt to alter the perception of someone else, and if it’s a lie about yourself, it’s usually to avoid accountability. For either of these types of lies, the end goal is to have the lie benefit yourself, even at the expense of someone else.
