I was stationed in Japan my last 5 years in the USN. Love Japan and the Japanese! As a military woman and American, I'm totally unlike Japanese women, but I was able to make friends with 3 elderly Japanese women. They were just as fascinated with me as I was with them. Japan is a great country and good friend to the USA!
For now, this connection is very positive. But my experience with digital technology is that what starts in a positive way will eventually attain a point of saturation, then of excess, until it becomes the opposite of its beginning. The algorithm and the profiteers will find a way to exploit this connection and in the end the worst aspects from both cultures may end up being passed from one to the other. Sorry for being so negative, i am just extrapolating my experience with this media.
"As they are a nation of customs, we are a nation of laws, and when they are disrespected, it becomes a point of anger for both of us." What a great point! And the dismantling of both is a downward spiral no matter how well intentioned. I saw a post by an American woman of Asian descent teaching gender studies in Japan and dismantling the fascism behind the Bento box. I am very sorry for the virus exported to Japan from US, but to be fair, it first came from France and Germany.
Yesterday a group at the dog park were aghast that someone in government acknowledged it was Good Friday as there are so many other religions in the country and how 'disrespectful.' Ten years ago, I might have had sympathy but now I see where this belief system leads and that it runs contrary to the real history. Ro Khanna, a representative in Northern California, stated with no reservation that we are a bible based nation. He thought the bible should be taught, not hidden, to gain a greater understanding of our nation. For example, fruit of the poisonous tree is a biblical notion. Every culture is in a vessel of a religious belief system. Our vessel allows for everyone else to jump in. If it breaks another one will take its place.
"Despite what communists in our media attempt to say about our nation, we are the most open and tolerant society in the world."
This is exactly right. It's an awkward fact for progressives to admit, because their narrative is focused on UNDOING all of the oppression and misery and bigotry in our society. If those aren't such major factors then their explanation for social disparities falls apart, and their agenda seems unnecessary and ridiculous.

You could be right but I think there are shared beliefs and appreciation of both cultures.
I think those things are solid. Plus, Japan isn't really seen as internationally controversial...at least from the Western perspective.
I think what's been exposed was that there was interest and admiration before this change. I think it's likely to stay relatively positive.
