“Only two types of people will tell you to separate yourself from your friends and family because of ideological differences: cult leaders and domestic abusers.”
There are so many excellent pull quotes in this article, but that’s the first one that jumped out at me, too. That and the comment that people you’ve always known aren’t suddenly different because of how they voted.
Those two thoughts actually go together. How is someone we only see through a screen more influential than our own knowledge and judgement of those closest to us?
My daughter moved away for a time to an environment of very different political values. She and I probably did not vote the same, although we’ve had some brilliant discussions that make me think I might be wrong. Without those discussions, how do you know? How do you influence one another?
But however she, or anyone else in the family chooses to vote is secondary to the fact that they are dear to me and the only thing we truly have in life. I’ll be damned if I will sacrifice them because some total stranger’s hurt feelings demand it.
I am not responsible for their healing especially since they brought the illness on themselves.
I thought, they were the people of JOY, PEACE AND LOVE?!?!? How can that be if you shun your family and friends that don’t believe or vote the way you do?!?!? We need to UNITE NOT DIVIDE!!!!!
Well said. I will say I no longer have anyone in my family or circle of friends who would cut me off for my political views, because they all did it nastily and publicly circa 2016. I tried and tried to reconnect but they were not interested. I came to understand they were too broken to be reliable thus incapable of a real relationship - so, should such a person today do the same, I wouldn't reach out even once to try to heal the relationship - because clearly there never really was one.
Adam, really busy at work today but a couple of quick thoughts...these two short paragraphs sum up your thoughts nicely:
"We need to get closer to people, to understand them, not stay away from them. People you’ve known and loved your entire life shouldn’t be easily discardable.
Ignorance breeds in isolation. We should learn from each other but we can’t learn if we stay away from people who don’t think like us."
The democrats are true to their colors when they suggest people act this way. First of all its incredibly childish and immature. If one doesn't get their way they take their ball and go home? So. Childish.
Next, America has always been full of people who see things differently. We fought a Civil War over different visions of how America should be, so deep seeded conflict is nothing new. And yet we have managed to figure out a way to get along and live together for nearly 250 years. Cutting away from family who you don't agree about politics with is not the answer. For starters everyone has that uncle or aunt who drives everyone crazy. Just treat this like that kind of situation. How about this...a no politics rule at the table and in the house. Just stay away from that. Politics is not why I love my children, for example, so with one daughter in particular we simply pledge to not talk about such things, if something comes on the TV we change the channel, etc. Be adults. This isn't really that difficult. Put your love for family members and friends above politics b/c its never been politics that unites us, its other stuff. If you have nothing else to talk about, well goodness, its time to look in the mirror and do some self-evaluation. Its your family for God's sakes...you should have PLENTY to talk about other than who President Trump picked to be the next Secretary of Defense. For Democrats I'd say this, with all due and sincere respect...get over it. Did you think that Trump's cabinet picks were something you were going to agree with? Come on, no one is that foolish or stupid. You're going to dislike all or most. I get it. I wasn't thrilled with ANYONE in the Biden administration. For Republicans, give the gloating a rest. This is family so you need to act like an adult too, not like some juvenile at a high school football game razzing the other team's fans. Put people and family and love ahead of everything, including and especially politics. Talk about your kids or grandkids or nieces and nephews, talk about your job or the job of your family members. Talk about plans for the next year. But ultimately just be a considerate, kind and mature adult. Get along. The ability to do that and be civil towards one another is in all of us. Bring your inner good guy out for the holidays and don't listen to democrats like Whoopi Goldberg and others.
Let's face it, family-shunning is bigotry to the extreme. This from the people who insist they're the tolerant ones.
Let's ask ourselves why this is happening. Here's an answer: The 'leaders'; of progressivism know they are on the way out, but they want to maintain power for as long as they can. Now that rational thought in America is overtaking progressive iditotology, progressive leaders need to isolate their subjects so that they don't hear essential truths. Thus, their minions are programmed to isolate themselves from anyone who might influence them away from progressive idiotology.
I've said for years, progressivism is a cult. And ALL cult leaders endeavor to isolate their subjects from the rest of the world. No cult can survive where rational interchange of ideas flourish.
Well-said. I've been seeing some strange congestive dissonance among my friends. On one hand they'll say "Yeah, that woke nonsense turned off a lot of people" and 5 minutes later say "I had no idea the nation was so hateful." So far it's unclear which attitude will win, but I'm glad to see them at least considering it.
Another odd observation is that I know people who voted for Harris despite disagreeing with her on many issues, especially the woke crap, and they rightly consider it normal to not be in 100% agreement with a candidate. But they can not apply this logic to someone who votes for Trump. They view voting for Trump as 100% total agreement with everything he's ever said or done, and total agreement with everything said about him.
I really hope to hear and read more from like minded people fight back on this idea. This is so very harmful, for both the family units and all the individuals involved. Self destructive for reinforcing life in a bubble and harmful to people being rejected for the crime of thinking differently. I particularly feel for the kids caught up in this nonsense. How do you explain to little Suzie that uncle Ken is a hater so we don't want him around ever again. I can hardly believe a mental health professional is spouting this insanity.
I think it is just clearly evil. But it also shows a dead end, nihilism. They clearly have not got anything else. No creativity, no open mind. Their reality doesn't jibe with reality.
We should seriously consider the possible consequences when people hit a dead end and are not creative enough to find their way out of it.
Family and friends should transcend politics…IMHO. However if family chooses to not come for the holidays and friends choose to de-friend me, that is their choice that they have to live with. Yes their choice impacts us but it should not cause anyone to grovel for their friendship. For the holidays those whom voted for Trump should be prepared to discuss in a rational and factual manner, w/o emotion. Fact to truth and leave it at that. OR declare a political free zone OR declare no political discussions after the 1st drink is served or you may be in for a root-in’-toot-in’ time!
Now can we finally admit who was driving the societal division over the last 14 years? It was never about Trump.
It was always about Leftists who use ideology to weaponize Cluster B personality disorders to manipulate the most vulnerable members of society to cause harm to everyone else. We are never going to get past this madness until we recognize its root causes:
The shunned friends and families now have really good reason to give thanks.
Matter of fact, I just had an idea for a social online start-up. A matchmaker type gig placing fractured friends and families together to share events. Who says you can’t choose your family?

The type of social movement that demands disconnection from family who are unbelievers is called "a cult."

I'm sorry you went through that.

I've noticed the same.
That so-called doctor is another example of DEI training.

I love the one-drink rule!

They are insane. Thanks for the commentary. Always enjoy your observations and arguments.
Do they want civil war?
Because this is how you get civil war.
Probably not right away, but it’s a step.
The shunned friends and families now have really good reason to give thanks.
