Equally perplexing are the 'fans' who seem to hang on the words of the famous and almost famous. The opinions of a soccer great or any movie personality are no more relevant than that of the guy running the taco truck. Probably less relevant since the taco vendor has to live in the real world.

There was a term "bread and circuses" used to describe life in ancient Rome and how it could keep people from engaging in the larger political discourse. It seems now that our modern "circus' performers - movie stars, sports figures, pop singers - are all having an opposite effect. People ARE getting involved, and for the most part, against the side that has enlisted them to try and influence us peons.
