I love this! And your approach of having him focus on small things that can be considered accomplishments is excellent. Human beings need to do difficult things and accomplish them to be mentally healthy, we need things to look forward to, and we need connection with other people.... all of which you provided. I’m in a profession where I can occasionally do something similar, and I try to always stay open to that possibility.
Thank you Valerie. Yeah, I've noticed that people look at these huge tasks when they're in that state of mind but they should work their way up to accomplishing them.
I work as a medical massage therapist in a chiropractic office... same thing. People can be so overwhelmed by distress over their pain and seemingly unable to do anything about it, the ‘nothing is helping’ phenomenon. I often recommend starting with breath work, maybe taking a walk every day to get fresh air and move in an easy way for your body. It can make a huge difference, especially in their perspective of their ability to affect the negative things going on in their life.
Good on you! It occurs to me the claims of the "scientific" mainstream might actually be more specious. We don't need to understand electricity to turn the kettle on.
I agree. In our need for everyone to have a place, a job, in society we have taken to over detailing some things which we fundamentally understand and have for millennia.
A kind word to a person that is depressed can mean the difference between fighting their illness and giving up. Depression feels like being in a deep hole that you can’t escape. Reaching out to a person with depression gives them the validation that their life matters and is worth living. It’s hard to describe the joy that you experience when you’re able to overcome your sadness and climb out of that hole. That friendly hand up makes a world of difference!
Congratulations on your success with this person. Indeed, the right words at the right time can change a life; that's the basis of therapy. Maybe you have gifts you didn't know you had?
What amount of dollars do folk pay their therapist for nowt even approaching this succinct essay? We are all our potential and this writing is all it should be; nothing more and nothing less. But, boy, do they want you to pay through the nose in money and time; even moreso for the BS layered on top; for what is so obvious we miss it altogether when we are sunk in that no-place.
This is a fantastic piece; and if you do no more, you have done all.
Well done, and thank you for the story. You make the case for doing the small things (since we can't individually fix the big things). While that man's life is no small thing, you stepped up to the plate and went to work where you could make a difference.

Exactly. Thank you for reading it.
Thank you and God bless you too.
