I was about to post that same thing. I love baseball, but I hate the MLB. If you want to see some exciting baseball with lots of grounders, steals, slides and such. just watch some NCAA women's softball. Gnarly. or better yet, La Crosse!
They grow up on ‘everybody is equal’ participation need to be awarded, sheap-mentality, the winners are bullies…..reporting the players’ faults makes them feel better about themselves
As a former game participant in football, baseball, rugby, tennis and also as a team coach in baseball, softball and football, i abhor where most sports are currently.
In WW-II, the president asked/ordered or strongly suggested that the Major League Baseball teams continue playing. This was for the average citizens to forget the tragedies of war for awhile, albeit only a few hours to build solidarity amongst themselves so as not to be troubled as much with the fact that there was an ONGOING WAR after the ‘War to end all wars’ that had only ceased twenty years or so prior to Pearl Harbor.
It was to raise the NATIONAL MORALE!!!
This changed ABRUPTLY; money, guaranteed contracts, social activism by players, owners and ‘SPORTS EXPERTS in the press.
Millionaires telling us how to be, whom we should vote and intrusions into our lives unnecessarily.
WE WANT SPORTS TO WATCH to forget, at less TEMPORARILY to take us away, as the Calgon advertisements did.
Until some of these LEAGUES & PLAYERS of all sports begin to invest THEIR monies (some of their MILLIONS) in the EDUCATIONAL systems in the cities in which they play, i personally will not PAY MONEY to watch any games on cable TV, buy tickets to games or buy team/player merchandise in support of these entities.
As it is now, i will only LISTEN ON RADIO to baseball games that are broadcast for FREE in the city where i reside.
I don't watch sports but I was fascinated doing so the other day at a bar waiting for a friend. It was a college game. A young guy, who looked like he might be from India, was receiving a scholarship from a sponsor during half-time. I looked at the massive crowds, the young women demonstrating their amazing athleticism in cheerleading, and I realized this is why people go to the games. It looked like a fun crazy unifying event. That those who are paid to highlight this unity now want to destroy it demonstrates the principle 'useful idiots.'
I am sure you want your comment to represent why most people go to or watch college games, but I do not agree. They go for the games. What they do not go for is politics, wokeness and the "spoiled brat" behavior of many of the athletes. Even the Army-Navy Game is becoming spoiled by sideshows. I am certain all the people honored between quarters are worthy, but during the game is not the place for those honors. Why those putting on sports events think they must dress up the game is beyond me.
I think the kid wasn't being honored. I think he was randomly selected because it all seemed jovial fun. It seemed part of a silly promotion for a soda. And the beauty was that it seemed anti-woke but the sound was turned off and I only watched for ten minutes. I was just happy to see so many happy faces. We are completely lacking that elsewhere.
I love sports and used to watch ESPN all the time. Now, only when I visit my father-in-law, as he still watches it. As they continue with their political agenda they have created ESPN W. Soon they'll have ESPN TRANS. As a side note, The Steelers played last night in a Thursday Night game. The cameraman "just happened" upon a young fan with half his face painted black and the other painted gold, you know, the colors of the Steeler... Wonder if Deadspin or some other idiot entity will make that into a "blackface" matter as well. And the beat goes on...
Great piece, hope deadspin gets sued into oblivion. Rooting for pro sportsball is the bread and circuses of clown world. Participate in amateur sports instead: https://yuribezmenov.substack.com/p/root-for-pro-sportsball-kaepernick-pfizer
